Liget Budapest Project is Becoming One of Europe’s Best Museum Quarters and Leisure Park

Major changes are taking place in the renovated city park. Both the park, the museums, the zoo and the exhibition halls will be renewed, and even more buildings will enrich Városliget. The Liget Budapest Project has been chosen as one of the best major projects in Europe as the city's biggest urban development project last year at MIPIM.

The project has now reached its stage of implementation. Thanks to the Liget Project, Városliget is transformed into a diverse green surface, with tens of thousands of square meters extra a green surface, with fewer paved roads offering a wide variety of leisure activities: sports grounds, playgrounds, cafes, running ring, dog rides, unobstructed passage everywhere for disabled visitors too, quality cafes and restaurants.

Renewal takes place in even more areas:

  • The Museum of Ethnography will receive a new building half-immersed in the ground. Although the Ethnographic Museum has a history of nearly 150 years, it has never had a permanent building for museum purposes. The building in the gateway to Városliget will be spectacular: a garden with a free path to the top of the museum is planned, and panoramic walkways are created on sloping, hilltop rooftops.
  • The National Gallery is built on the site of the dilapidated building of Petőfi Hall. From 2021 the New National Gallery will present together the masterpieces of Hungarian and European art from the 19th century to present times.
  • The former Városliget Theater, now called the Városligeti Theater for Children, is being rebuilt. The Theater was founded in 1879, and demolished in 1952, but it is going to be rebuilt with the renewed portfolio in the city park.
  • The House of Hungarian Music will be established. The building will be built on the premises of the offices of Hungexpo. The Hungarian Music House, which is based on the plans of the world-famous Japanese Sou Fujimoto, is going to be a permanent exhibition of Hungarian music.
  • The Budapest Zoo will be renewed too with a new part of the garden called the Pannon Park. The largest renewal of it will be Biodome, which is the largest covered tropical hall in Europe.
  • The building of the Museum of Transportation will get back its pre-war beauty and the House of Hungarian Innovation will be created, which will present the Hungarian inventions and the Hungarian inventive genius in an interactive way.
  • The Museum of Fine Arts will be renewed as well. This year, the reconstruction of the museum for nearly three years is completed, the largest undertaking of which is the renovation of the Romanian Hall, closed to visitors for more than seventy years. The most impressive venue was heavily damaged in World War II, and has since been used as a storage room.
  • Castle of Vajdahunyad will be renovated. The size of Lake Városligeti will be increased, which will allow us to dive around the lake to Vajdahunyad Castle.
  • Olof Palme House is undergoing a monumental reconstruction that will restore the original beauty of the 130-year-old building and will continue to be as the Millennium House. Its purpose is to present the glory of Budapest, during the millennium era.

Every visitor will enjoy a more and better new Városliget. New buildings will be built on the site of old buildings, which are to be dismantled, and the replacement of concrete surfaces like parking lots to protect the green areas.

There is also a turnover in the area: they close the Kós Károly promenade, which will result in less polluting emissions. Parkings and underground garages are built and Bubi stations are being placed there. The noise will be reduced, the air will be better, the infrastructure will improve – hence the value of nearby real estates will also increase.
