HUF 8 Billion for the Reconstruction of the Castle District

back

HUF 7.9 billion will be spent on the reconstruction of the Castle District in Buda by 2016. A 300-car underground garage has already been built under the Castle Garden Bazaar; a similar one will be built under Szent György tér by the end of 2015 for HUF 1.5 billion.

The Former Riding Hall at Szent György tér Is to Be Rebuilt

The former riding hall at Szent György tér is to be rebuilt by 2016; the project will cost HUF 2 billion. The reconstruction of Stöckl Stairs and the watch post building will cost HUF 3.5 billion, and that of the Táncsics Prison and the Erdélyi Bastion will cost HUF 400 million. A temporary visitors’ center will be opened in the latter one, where the artefacts unearthed at the site during the reconstruction will be displayed.

Kiscelli Museum Is to Be Renewed

The development of the Kiscelli Museum costs HUF 317.5 million, and the hall above the main entrance of the Budapest History Museum will also be renewed. The Carmelite Monastery gets reconstructed, too, but its costs are not covered by the HUF 8-billion budget. The cultural functions of the Castle will be kept after the reconstruction, but certain buildings will also be used for governmental purposes.

National Széchényi Library Is to Be Moved Out

According to the plans the National Széchényi Library will be moved out of its current place to a more modern one, and the old building will be used for cultural purposes. The Castle District is to be fully renewed by 2024, within the confines of the Hauszmann Plan.
