​The Most Extraordinary Pubs in Budapest

There are several pubs in Budapest that are located in buildings that had way different functions before. Locals and tourists may not even have a clue they are having drinks in a former primary school, a transformer station or on a stone-carrier ship.
IskolaThe pub called Iskola (School), the former Tűzraktér is operating in the building of a former primary school. The 3500 square-meter property located in the 6th district was home for Tűzraktér pub from 2008 until 2011. Iskola was opened in 2011: its interior was inspired of the schools of the 1970-80s – it even has a gymnasium and a canteen.

Dürer KertThe Dürer Kert (Dürer Garden) is also operating in a former school building: the pub located in the 14th district was opened in 2008 in the former building of Eötvös Loránd University of Science.

TrafóIn accordance with its name Trafó pub is operating in the building of a former transformer station. The pub located in the 9th district was opened in 1998. Its building was built in 1909, and the mentioned transformer station operated there until 1960. During one summer in the 1990s concerts were held here, and after Trafó got the place.


Tesla.rarThe Tesla.rar pub located in the 7th district was opened this year. The pub is also operating in a building of a former transformer station, next to the Hungarian Electronic Museum.

A38The A38 pub was opened in a former Ukrainian stone-carrier ship called Artemovsk 38. The ship was built in 1968, landed in Budapest in 2003, and the pub was opened in 2005. It’s very popular among the locals and tourists as well: in 2012 the voters of Electronic Beats pronounced it the best pub of the world.
